On November 4, 2024, in Shanghai, the Special Steel Association has convened its annual council meeting where they discussed the current situation, tensions, and prospects of China’s special steel industry. While not just a major player in the global market, the country’s special steel industry has also become the world’s largest producer with strong momentum in technological innovation and diversity in satisfying the demands of the market.

Current Status and Achievements

China has consolidated its position as the global leader in special steel production.Headquartered by the country’s large members of the Special Steel Association, a total of 76 million tons of special steel were produced in 2023, which is an approximate increase of 1.7% as compared to the previous year. The industry sought product structure optimization to cater to multilayered market demand. Some of the important products, such as gear steel, spring steel for automotive applications, bearing steel, and high-performance oil and gas pipeline steel, have reached world-class standards.

The ranks of high-end special steel enterprises within China have made huge progress, and some of their products have become vital participants in global supply chains for high-end equipment manufacturing. Domestic enterprises also increased their investments in R&D, partnering with universities and research institutions on technical upgrades. The industry is highly dependent on increased and growing demand, particularly in areas such as automotive manufacturing, aerospace, machinery, energy, and defense, where the trend of replacing imports with domestically produced special steel seems to continue gaining traction.
